Staples Corner Built-in Bookshelves

We make built-in bookshelves in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in Staples Corner. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Staples Corner?

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels, and can include a desk or a window seat.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Books with nowhere left to go

The wider area includes historic houses like Heath House, about 2.2 miles east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

How to choose a carpenter in London

Built-in bookshelves in Staples Corner: what you get

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it is best put right before fitting. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bare walls that could hold shelving and a room lined with books.

Around Staples Corner, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Built-in living-room furniture in Staples Corner

In the streets around Staples Corner, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 38%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 19%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Staples Corner include Church of St John (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Staples Corner joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For a family home near Parkfield Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Clarefield Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards.
  3. A quote in writing follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Is Staples Corner in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Barnet, Staples Corner included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Brent Cross West station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

How do I get started?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

When you need someone else

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
