Built-in Bookshelves in Wembley

In Wembley, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Shelves that sag under books

How we make built-in bookshelves for Wembley

If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it’s worth planning carefully. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it. Most enquiries start with a bare wall above a doorway and space for art books and records, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Most internal walls in homes from recent decades are plasterboard on studs, and the board won’t carry a heavy load on its own. Around Wembley, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how built-in bookshelves are fixed: tall units stand on the floor and are tied into the studs, and shelves use fixings made for the board where there’s no stud.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you’re after

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Wembley

My home in Wembley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to North Wembley station?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

How deep should bookshelves be?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Wembley

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Shelves that sag under books

For an older house near St Augustine, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There is no grain to show through the paint.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 46% of households in the streets around Wembley live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a family home near Wembley Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Preston Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
