In Harrow on the Hill, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

- Shelves that sag under books
- Bare walls that could hold shelving

Built-in bookshelves in Harrow on the Hill: what you get
Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so we don’t box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether. If your home has space for art books and records and bare walls that could hold shelving, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A good part of the housing around Harrow on the Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are usually straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
- Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
- Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
Keep a record of the colour. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.
Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.
Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast
- Making good walls that can’t take fixings
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Harrow on the Hill
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Sudbury Hill Harrow station?
Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
