Built-in bookshelves in Northwick Park
Do you need built-in bookshelves in Northwick Park?
New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Room for a record collection
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
Living in a block of flats near Kenton station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- A written quote that sets out the job
How we make built-in bookshelves for Northwick Park
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you are living with bare walls that could hold shelving and low shelves children can reach, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Many homes around Northwick Park were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats in newer developments. Living rooms in newer homes can be compact, so shallower units and wall-hung cupboards keep the floor open. Boxed-in pipes and service risers are common, and they can be built around rather than hidden badly.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Do you cover homes near Kenton station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Northwick Park?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The bookcase is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
How to get a quote
To make a start, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Northwick Park homes and built-in bookshelves
In the streets around Northwick Park, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Northwick Park is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 35% of homes in the area around Northwick Park date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.
If you live in a period home close to Saint Cuthberts Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live near Preston Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Looking after your furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
Keep a record of the colour for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves.
