Built-in bookshelves for homes in Harrow

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in Harrow, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. If your home has books with nowhere left to go and a bare wall above a doorway, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Around Harrow, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Built-in living-room furniture in Harrow

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Harrow were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so the rest of London has its own. If your road in Harrow falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Harrow-on-the-Hill station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Northwick Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Harrow is one of London’s 33 local authority areas. Anywhere in Harrow, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space

To get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Harrow, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have

Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along, so the paint is not scuffed.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves so spills don’t mark the paint. Wipe up spills straight away.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Harrow?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Harrow?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

We plan around it with care. We leave space so heat is not trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
