How we make built-in bookshelves for Stanmore
Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that is usually left bare. If your home has shelves that suit a period room and wasted wall space around a door or window, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of built-in bookshelves are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Stanmore, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- The sections are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Why bespoke in Stanmore?
A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish, and every part is planned for the wall. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Stanmore
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Stanmore were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Stanmore include Church of St John (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and Church of St William of York (Grade II), under half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 25% of homes in the area around Stanmore were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so built-in bookshelves often run along a full wall, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.
Headstone Manor, about 2.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For a flat near Harrow & Wealdstone station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Where other trades come in
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Relocating radiators or pipework

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- Shelves that sag under books
- Books with nowhere left to go
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Storage for children’s books and games
If you live near Canons Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Before you choose who makes it
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It is easy to touch up later.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Stanmore
Does a conservation area in or near Stanmore affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Harrow & Wealdstone station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.
How do I get a quote?
Just tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.
