About our built-in bookshelves in Rowley Green

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about books piled on the floor and space for art books and records.

Around Rowley Green, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Rowley Green?

Yes. Rowley Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Rowley Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Let us know about heavy collections at the design visit.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The fitting depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.

Preparing the room

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Rowley Green homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Rowley Green, with about 33% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Rowley Green, Historic England’s list includes Trinders Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Barnet is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Rowley Green, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Holy Cross, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Barnet Gate Wood, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Why bespoke in Rowley Green?

A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so it is already halfway to built in. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why us?

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Rowley Green

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window

If your children go to Saffron Green Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There is no grain to show through the paint.

Plinths and scribe strips

Most period walls need scribing. It gives built-in shelves their built-in look.
