Built-in bookshelves in Finchley
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If you’re living with empty alcoves that could hold books and shelves packed two rows deep, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Finchley built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, especially behind loaded shelves.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that is not straight the gaps show. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

What we do not do
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Making good walls that cannot take fixings
- Relocating radiators or pipework

Practical tips
These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
- Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
If you have adjustable shelves, move them when they’re empty, and check the supports are fully seated.
Put coasters under anything that holds water. Dry any spills quickly.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Finchley
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Finchley?
Yes. Finchley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.
I live near New Southgate station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, and the rest can be adjustable.
Built-in living-room furniture in Finchley
In the area around Finchley, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Finchley, Historic England’s list includes The Manor House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west, and Villa at the Convent of the Good Shepherd (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Barnet sets its own rules. If your street in Finchley is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
If you live near Victoria Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Finchley, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.
