How we make built-in bookshelves for High Barnet

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether. People typically come to us about somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and empty alcoves that could hold books, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A good part of the housing around High Barnet is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the price in High Barnet

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

To get a quote for built-in bookshelves in High Barnet, use our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Living-room storage in High Barnet

Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around High Barnet, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Wood Street Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of High Barnet. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around High Barnet, about 42% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Barnet as a whole, about 20%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of built-in bookshelves.

For an older house near Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For a family home near Foulds School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near King George's Fields (Monken Hadley), built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Cupboards below
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You send us some details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Advice

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you cover homes near Hadley Wood station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in High Barnet?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, and the rest can be adjustable.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Tips worth knowing

People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting

Keep a record of the colour so any touch-ups match. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.
