How we make built-in bookshelves for Whetstone
In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. If you are living with shelves packed two rows deep and space for art books and records, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Whetstone, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Whetstone
Do you cover homes near Oakleigh Park station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Whetstone?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
It depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How do I get a quote?
Simply fill in our short enquiry form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

What else we make in Whetstone
How it is made
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. You choose the colour.
Spray-painted finish
Because the bookcase is sprayed before fitting, it arrives finished. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.
Could you do it yourself?
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
What prompts built-in bookshelves in Whetstone
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A home library or study
- Shelves that sag under books
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
Before you hire any carpenter

- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
