Our built-in bookshelves across Barnet

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Barnet, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for art books and records and books with nowhere left to go.

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.

Quotes in Barnet

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Built-in bookshelves across Barnet: local notes

Most people in Barnet who ask about built-in bookshelves want somewhere for books, the TV and the things that pile up. One design can bring those together, made in our workshop and fitted on the days set out in your quote.

In Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in Barnet (about 34%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both. Of the 41 places we have local pages for in Barnet, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Barnet is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Finchley: For an older house near St Paul's Finchley, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Heath Hall, about 1.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What affects the price in Barnet

The price for your room depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How square the room is
  • The internal fittings

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Allow room for the collection to grow

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Don’t load shelves beyond what they were planned for. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so we can allow for it.

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Questions from Barnet

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

What are your built-in bookshelves made from?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It is possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

We set the depth to suit what you own. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
