Built-in bookshelves for your home in East Finchley
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so it is already halfway to built in. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
Why us?

Built-in bookshelves in East Finchley
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it. It makes use of wall space that’s normally left bare. Typical reasons to get in touch are books piled on the floor and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
London homes run from Victorian terraces and interwar semis to mansion blocks and recent flats, and your home in East Finchley could be any one of them. Because walls and floors change with the age of a house, the design of built-in bookshelves starts during the design visit. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Built-in bookshelves in East Finchley: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 35% of the housing in the streets around East Finchley, with about 29% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 21 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of East Finchley. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Barnet are set locally. If your road in East Finchley falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your children go to Holy Trinity CofE Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live in a period home close to Church of the Holy Trinity, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Questions we are often asked
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in East Finchley?
Yes, we work across Barnet, East Finchley included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. Fixings are chosen for the wall type. If a wall is not suitable, we’ll tell you.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.
Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
What it costs
What you pay depends on:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How square the room is
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Any ideas or images you have saved
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Ask for a quote
To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
