Built-in bookshelves in South Tottenham

Questions from South Tottenham

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in South Tottenham?

Yes, South Tottenham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Haringey and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in South Tottenham?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

About our built-in bookshelves in South Tottenham

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. If you are living with bookcases that lean or wobble and a home library or study, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large share of the homes around South Tottenham were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cupboards below
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have

Keep a record of the colour. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelves packed two rows deep

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Ann, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

How to choose a carpenter in London

Built-in bookshelves for homes in South Tottenham

Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a flat close to Seven Sisters station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to Church of Holy Trinity, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
