Fitted wardrobes in N16: how it works

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and empty alcoves in the bedroom.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Around West Hackney

We fit furniture in homes around Benthal Primary School, Church of St Andrew and Tawhid Boys School. You’ll also find The Coach And Horses Public House (close by, under half a mile north-west), Stoke Newington Common (within half a mile north), St Michael and All Angels (a few minutes’ walk north-east) and The Petchey Academy (0.5 miles south). There is a railway station in West Hackney itself: Rectory Road station. Nearby you’ll also find Clowns Gallery-Museum (1.1 miles south) and Hackney Walk (1.2 miles south-east). Not far away are Woodberry Wetlands.

Fitted wardrobes across N16: local notes

If your bedroom in N16 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in N16, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 48% of homes in N16 were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 25% of households in N16, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

West Hackney: For a flat near Rectory Road station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Barnabas, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How we price fitted wardrobes

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • The overall size of the piece

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day

Don’t pack clothes tight against the back panel, especially on an external wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can. A little ventilation in the room helps.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That’s a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room and are made for that room alone.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Questions from N16

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How do I get a quote?

Simply drop us a line using the contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The fitting depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop before we come to fit them.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
