Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the finish.

Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so we can allow for it.

About our built-in bookshelves in West Green

If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it. If your home has bowing shelves in an old bookcase and books piled on the floor, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Around West Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives built-in bookshelves an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Living-room storage in West Green

In the neighbourhood around West Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 61%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The St Ann's Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Green. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 61% of homes in the area around West Green were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.

Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Ann, under half a mile south-east of the centre of West Green, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.1 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Seven Sisters station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in West Green

Is West Green in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Haringey, West Green included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

I live near Seven Sisters station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
