Bowes Park Built-in Bookshelves

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Bowes Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Books piled on the floor

Built-in bookshelves for your home in Bowes Park

Built-in bookshelves in Bowes Park: what you get

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are books with nowhere left to go and bookshelves in keeping with an older house.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Bowes Park went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Living-room storage in Bowes Park

In the area around Bowes Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 21 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bowes Park. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Bowes Park, let us know at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Top Rank Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Alexandra Palace station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Woodside Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Bowes Park is part of the London Borough of Haringey, about 2 miles east of Tottenham. Whether your home in Bowes Park is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Haringey, large and small.

In N22, N11 and N8, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street like High Road, Park Road and Edith Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for built-in bookshelves. Nearby, we also make built-in bookshelves in Bounds Green (1 mile north-west), Oakthorpe Park (1 mile north), Palmers Green (1 mile north), Arnos Grove (1 mile north-west) and New Southgate (1 mile north-west). Elsewhere in Haringey, we also cover Tottenham (2 miles east), Tottenham Green (2 miles south-east), Crouch End (2 miles south), South Tottenham (2 miles south-east), Seven Sisters (2 miles south-east) and Finsbury Park (2 miles south).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Bowes Park

My house in Bowes Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Bowes Park?

Yes, Bowes Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Haringey and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
