Fitted wardrobes in N17: how it works

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. Most enquiries start with space under the eaves going to waste and dusty space on top of the wardrobe; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

How our quotes work

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across N17

Homes across N17, Tottenham, Noel Park and Tottenham Green included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.

About 45% of the homes in N17 went up before 1919, and about 17% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than a third of the homes in the N17 postcode district (about 45%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Older bedrooms normally have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. Of the 11 places we have local pages for in N17, 4 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Tottenham: If you live near Bruce Castle Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Bruce Castle, about 0.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.

Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat across wider sections.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in N17

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in N17

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We look at it with you when we measure.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.
