Built-in bookshelves in St John's Wood: what you get
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in St John's Wood, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. People normally come to us about a home library or study and books piled on the floor, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Getting long pieces into a flat often takes the most planning. Since most households around St John's Wood live in purpose-built flats, built-in bookshelves are designed in sections from the start, sized for the tightest point on the way in. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking near your home
- The number of doors and drawers
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
What we need to know
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in St John's Wood
I live in a flat in St John's Wood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in St John's Wood?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How do I get a quote?
Just fill in our short enquiry form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Allow room for the collection to grow
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.
Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

What it’s made from
Birch plywood
How much a shelf bends depends on its span and what it carries. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat, particularly with a stiffening lip.
Shelves
Depth is set around what you keep, from shallow paperback shelves to deeper ones for records.
Built-in living-room furniture in St John's Wood
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St John's Wood were built before 1919 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 270 entries within half a mile of the centre of St John's Wood. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Fewer homes around St John's Wood date from before 1919 than across Westminster: about 30%, against about 49%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. So the walls behind built-in bookshelves here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 0.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Close to Primrose Hill? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Nuffield Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
