Your questions about TV and media units in St John's Wood

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St John's Wood?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in St John's Wood?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket and the cable route behind it. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket, which we look at during the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

TV and media units in St John's Wood: what you get

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are space for a soundbar and speakers and wasted space around the screen.

Getting long pieces into a flat often takes the most planning. With purpose-built flats home to most households around St John's Wood, the sections for TV and media units are planned during the design visit. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why us?

  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • A design visit, then a written quote

How fitting works for TV and media units

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a quote in writing covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

TV and media units in St John's Wood: local notes

About 30% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St John's Wood went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The St John's Wood Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of St John's Wood. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in St John's Wood is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

If your children go to George Eliot Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Primrose Hill, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a period home close to Church of All Souls, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
