St James's Built-in Bookshelves

In St James's, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelves packed two rows deep

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Starting with a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, message us from the contact page. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in St James's

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves that suit a period room and a room lined with books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around St James's date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Built-in bookshelves in St James's: local notes

About 54% of the homes in the streets around St James's went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of St James's include The Haymarket Theatre (theatre Royal) (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Institute of Directors (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in St James's will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Close to St Anne's Churchyard? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For an older house near St James’s Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to Soho Parish CofE Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

St James's is within the City of Westminster, about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and St James's is part of that. Across Westminster, we cover St James's and the places around it.

Every home in W1F, W1D and W1J is covered for built-in bookshelves, from the main roads to the quieter streets. If your home is on a street like Duck Lane, Bruton Lane and Bridle Lane, or close by, we can visit to measure up for built-in bookshelves. Main roads around St James's include the A4 and A400. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to St James's include Chinatown (1 mile north), Charing Cross (1 mile east), Soho (1 mile north), West End (1 mile north-east) and Burlington Estate (1 mile west). Other parts of Westminster we cover include Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles west), Little Venice (2 miles west) and Westbourne Green (3 miles west). St James's is one of the larger places we cover in Westminster.

Around St James's

We fit furniture in homes around London Library, Tom Cribb pub and Harris Westminster Sixth Form. There’s a railway station in St James's itself: London Charing Cross station. A little further out are Montfichet's Tower (1.4 miles east) and Kingly Court (less than half a mile north-west). Open spaces near St James's include Ludgate Hill and St. James's Park Lake.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Questions we’re often asked

My house in St James's is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

My home in St James's is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that’s often left bare.

Why bespoke in St James's?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that is not straight the gaps show. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What affects the price in St James's

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Honest limits

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.
