St John's Wood Under-Stairs Storage

Pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs, designed for your room in St John's Wood. After a design visit and a written quote, it is made in our workshop and fitted in your home.

  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. At the design visit, the space is measured and any meters are noted.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

About our under-stairs storage in St John's Wood

No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply cannot manage. People usually come to us about a fuse board that’s hard to get to and the low end of the space going to waste, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Most homes around St John's Wood are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Pricing under-stairs storage in St John's Wood

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Getting in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Examples of the look you are after

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in St John's Wood

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in St John's Wood?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St John's Wood?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to use our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Why bespoke in St John's Wood?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly, leaving more floor clear.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Work across the whole of London
  • 300+ projects completed

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where the finish is most on show.

Under-stairs storage in St John's Wood: local notes

About 30% of the homes in the streets around St John's Wood went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of St John's Wood. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around St John's Wood (about 29%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Nuffield Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Primrose Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to George Eliot Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
