How we make fitted cupboards for Barking Riverside

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. If you’re living with a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and making use of an awkward alcove or corner, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many homes around Barking Riverside have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Storage in Barking Riverside homes: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 56% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Barking Riverside, with about 37% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 37% of homes in the streets around Barking Riverside were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit. Depending on your street in Barking Riverside, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.

Eastbury Manor House, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions from Barking Riverside

Is Barking Riverside in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Barking Riverside is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barking Riverside?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  3. You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician
  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Leave room in front of the meters

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, especially on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.
