Fitted cupboards in Castle Green

Fitted cupboards for homes in Castle Green

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. People typically come to us about built-in storage that matches the woodwork and tall cupboards where space is short, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Castle Green, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Plinths and scribe strips are small parts that make a big difference in a room where nothing is quite square.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan fitted cupboards. They help whatever the room:

  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Make a note of what needs a home

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it’s typically a small hinge adjustment.

It helps to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, so it helps to know this early.

Questions from Castle Green

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Castle Green?

Yes, we work across Barking and Dagenham, Castle Green included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Castle Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Starting with a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
