About our TV and media units in Barking Riverside

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. Typical reasons to get in touch are games, controllers and remotes everywhere and a screen at the wrong height, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around Barking Riverside date from 2000 onwards, and in a newer home the living space is typically open-plan, without a chimney breast. So TV and media units often give the room its shape, along a full wall or around the TV. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Built-in living-room furniture in Barking Riverside

About 56% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Barking Riverside went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 37% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Newer homes are more common around Barking Riverside than across Barking and Dagenham: about 37% date from 2000 onwards, against about 20%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes. About 37% of homes in the streets around Barking Riverside were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.

For a flat near Barking Riverside station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight, and open shelves hold what’s used every day.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere

The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 1 mile north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Questions from Barking Riverside

My home in Barking Riverside is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Barking Riverside?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits doors, panels and the visible faces of a TV wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall, so there’s no gap.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

What affects the price in Barking Riverside

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Your postcode and the borough

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
