Fitted cupboards for homes in Barking

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage in a corner nothing else fits and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes.

Many homes around Barking were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Wiring for lights or sockets

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Barking

Do you cover homes near Barking station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barking?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Barking

In the streets around Barking, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Barking include Eastbury Manor House (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Church of St Patrick (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Barking and Dagenham has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

If your children go to Eastbury Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Mayesbrook Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to Barking station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It helps to let us know about parking then, as a van typically needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
