Fitted cupboards in Berry's Green

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are space for laundry, cleaning things and boots and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.

Around Berry's Green, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Fitted cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you get in touch:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Let us know how parking works on your street

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it is typically a small hinge adjustment.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it’s worth doing before the design is agreed.

Fitted storage in Berry's Green

In the streets around Berry's Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Berry's Green include The Old Jail Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Bell Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 76% of households in the streets around Berry's Green, based on Census 2021. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For a flat near Chelsfield station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near Cudham Church of England Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Shelves

Sagging shelves are avoidable with the right thickness, lip or support.

Spray-painted finish

With a spray finish, the painting is done in the workshop, so there is less to do on site.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Why us?

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Finished by spray or by hand

Questions from Berry's Green

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Berry's Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What are the cupboards made of?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in a colour you choose.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
