Fitted cupboards in Single Street: local notes

About 29% of the homes in the streets around Single Street went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Single Street. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Single Street. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Chelsfield station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. Down House, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Single Street is in the London Borough of Bromley, about 5 miles north of Orpington. We can visit homes in Single Street on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. Single Street is one of the places in Bromley where we make fitted cupboards.

In TN16, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here like Berry's Hill and Single Street, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted cupboards. Close by, we also work in Berry's Green (1 mile south), Luxted (1 mile north-west) and Aperfield (1 mile south-west). We also make fitted cupboards in nearby places such as Orpington (5 miles north), Bromley (6 miles north), Beckenham (7 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (5 miles north), Chislehurst (7 miles north) and Plaistow (7 miles north).

Around Single Street

We fit furniture in homes around Charles Darwin School and The Old Jail Public House and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Chelsfield station, about 3.3 miles north-east. For a walk, there is Downe Bank.

How we make fitted cupboards for Single Street

The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are a cupboard for the meters with easy access and making use of an awkward alcove or corner; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Single Street, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a square room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it is built for. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Single Street?

Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Sloping floors, walls that lean and odd alcove widths leave gaps that collect dust and look untidy. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

Fitted cupboards can help with:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Peter and St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Single Street

Is parking a problem for fitting in Single Street?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

What affects the price in Single Street

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
