How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know in advance helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Advice

Fitted cupboards in Brockley Hill

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Most enquiries start with using the full height of a room and a cupboard for the meters with easy access; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Rooms in post-war homes tend to be simple, with plain skirting and no cornice, so fitted storage can be crisp and simple to match. Around Brockley Hill, many homes were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Every space is still measured on site, as nothing is assumed to be square.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room

If you live in a flat close to Elstree & Borehamwood station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Where other trades come in

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Making good walls after other work
  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface. The colour is agreed with you.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, which can add a good deal of storage. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Brockley Hill

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brockley Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Is Brockley Hill in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Brockley Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the job. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.
