Common questions about TV and media units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brockley Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Brockley Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Can you plan for a future TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV so the unit suits your next set. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits. Once it’s in, do not block the gaps.

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That job is for your electrician. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are equipment with nowhere proper to go and speakers muffled behind doors.

Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around Brockley Hill, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. In a post-war living room, the walls are usually flatter than in a Victorian one, which helps, though every wall and floor is still measured before anything is made. Cable routes, ventilation for set-top boxes and the position of sockets all go into the design.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It’s also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Living-room carpentry in Brockley Hill: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Brockley Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Brockley Hill, Historic England’s list includes Brockley Hill Farmhouse (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Barnet is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Brockley Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Elstree & Borehamwood station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Edgwarebury Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your children go to London Academy or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

How we price TV and media units

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

For a quote for TV and media units in Brockley Hill, get in touch through our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. We will arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.

Honest limits

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
