Fitted cupboards for your home in Belmont
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
How we make fitted cupboards for Belmont
Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors often slope. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. Most enquiries start with a utility room with proper storage and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
An interwar house normally has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Belmont, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Harrow & Wealdstone station?
Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Does a conservation area in or near Belmont affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What are the cupboards made of?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in a colour you choose.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
How are fitted cupboards priced?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Arranging a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Advice
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

About 61% of the homes in the area around Belmont went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Looking after your furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Leave room in front of the meters
- Measure the route into the room as well as the room
- Deal with any damp walls first
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.
Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and it is easiest to plan for them at the start.
