How we make fitted wardrobes for Brockley Hill
The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. People typically come to us about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and too little room for clothes; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A bedroom in a 1950s or 1960s home is usually a straightforward rectangle, often with the window on the outside wall and the door near a corner. Many homes around Brockley Hill date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, which often means a whole wall of fitted furniture with few tricky cuts. We plan the space in front first, so everything opens fully.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we’re often asked
My home in Brockley Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Brockley Hill?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Brockley Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
It is common, and it’s allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Brockley Hill
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Brockley Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Brockley Hill, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Brockley Hill, let us know at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.
If you live near Edgwarebury Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Near listed buildings like Brockley Hill Farmhouse, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of Brockley Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near London Academy, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What affects the price in Brockley Hill
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How big the furniture is
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Before the design visit
When you contact us, these help most:
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
Honest limits
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Structural changes to the room
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- Once you are happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
