Your questions about fitted cupboards in Bush Hill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bush Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Bush Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How much time does fitting need?

Every job is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

About our fitted cupboards in Bush Hill

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If your home has storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and cupboards for a utility or boot room, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Bush Hill, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and fitted cupboards are made to suit it.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Measure the route into the room along with the room itself
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Leave room in front of the meters

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. Treat the doors gently at first and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

Fitted cupboards in Bush Hill: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bush Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and before 1919 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Bush Hill is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Bush Hill (about 39%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Bush Hill

Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Tower, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Where they’ll park and unload

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it’s finished before fitting day.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how a cupboard meets a wall that isn’t flat, closing any gaps.
