Fitted cupboards in Ponders End

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are making use of an awkward alcove or corner and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Ponders End, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Ponders End?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Ponders End station?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It’s useful to tell us about parking then, as a van normally needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Related advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is typically the better answer. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What we do not do

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Moving gas or electricity meters
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Moving or servicing a boiler

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
