Fitted cupboards for your home in Enfield
Fitted cupboards in Enfield
Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and a neat cupboard around the boiler.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Enfield, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Think about how the cupboards will get in
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Let us know how parking works on your street
- Do not store things against the boiler
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.
Tell us about parking and access during the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
Making use of awkward spaces in Enfield
About 31% of the homes in the area around Enfield went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Enfield, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Andrew Enfield Parish Church (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and North East Building of Enfield Grammar School (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 31% of homes in the neighbourhood around Enfield date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.
Living in a block of flats near Enfield Town station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Forty Hall, about 1.3 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Moving gas or electricity meters
- Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

Common questions about fitted cupboards
Does a conservation area in or near Enfield affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, which is a fair point in their favour. Ours takes more planning: a design visit, a quote, making and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It helps to let us know about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- The sections are carried in, joined and set level.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
