About our fitted cupboards in Arnos Grove

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. People normally come to us about tidying away the gas and electricity meters and using the full height of a room, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around Arnos Grove, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Arnos Grove homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Arnos Grove were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Arnos Grove include Arnos Grove Underground Station (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Broomfield House Broomfield Park (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Arnos Grove, let us know at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of London, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If you live near Broomfield Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions from Arnos Grove

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Arnos Grove?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

How it’s made

Shelves

Sagging shelves are avoidable with the right thickness, lip or support.

Plinths and scribe strips

These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on your lease, and it is best done early.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
