Clapton Fitted Cupboards

Built-in cupboards for hallways, landings, utility rooms and boot rooms, for homes in Clapton. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner

Fitted cupboards designed for your room

Why bespoke in Clapton?

There is a place for both. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is normally the better answer. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Fitted cupboards in Clapton

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are cupboards for a utility or boot room and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Clapton built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Clapton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Clapton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and keep access clear for the engineer.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the job. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

How we price fitted cupboards

Several things affect the price:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Storage in Clapton homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Clapton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and the years since 2000 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. The centre of Clapton is within about a quarter of a mile of the Clapton Pond Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Living in a block of flats near Clapton station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Sutton House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If your children go to BSix Sixth Form College or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Clapton is part of the London Borough of Hackney, about 2 miles south of Shoreditch. Wherever you are in Clapton, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. We cover places right across Hackney, large and small.

Design visits and fitting in E5, N16 and E8 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street such as Muir Road, Downs Road and Tilia Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for fitted cupboards. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted cupboards include Lea Bridge (1 mile north-east), West Hackney (1 mile west), Homerton (1 mile south-east), Lower Clapton (1 mile south-east) and Shacklewell (1 mile south-west). We also make fitted cupboards in nearby places such as Shoreditch (2 miles south), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), Haggerston (2 miles south-west) and Manor House (2 miles north-west).

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it’s normally a small hinge adjustment.

It’s useful to list what you want to store before we measure. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, so it helps to know this early.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
