TV and Media Units in Clapton

We make TV and media units for homes in Clapton, designed around the room you have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

How we make TV and media units for Clapton

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If your home has nowhere good for speakers and clutter around the TV, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and around Clapton, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height TV and media units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Shelves

Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that are not straight.

Is bespoke worth it?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. It’s also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes, which is a fair point in its favour. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What TV and media units can’t fix

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Your questions about TV and media units in Clapton

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Clapton in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Clapton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hackney and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. Tell us the size you have in mind.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

Cable routes are built into the design, with openings and access panels. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

That’s a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting.

TV and media units for homes in Clapton

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Clapton were built before 1919 (about 46%) and since 2000 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Clapton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Clapton will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

Near listed buildings like Pond House, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Clapton, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to BSix Sixth Form College or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For a flat near Clapton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
