Fitted cupboards in Upper Clapton

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. Typical reasons to get in touch are using the full height of a room and a cupboard for a recess or odd corner, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Fitted cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room is not. You choose the paint colour, and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Upper Clapton?

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They are not much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, and that shapes the design. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

If you live near Springfield Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies at the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Upper Clapton

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Upper Clapton

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Upper Clapton in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Upper Clapton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hackney and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
