How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

How to prepare

Advice

How we make fitted cupboards for College Park

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and cupboards for a utility or boot room.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around College Park, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Questions we are often asked

I live in a flat in College Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in College Park?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

We use a plinth to set the cupboard level on an uneven floor. Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall.

Shelves

Sagging shelves are avoidable with the right thickness, lip or support.

Pricing fitted cupboards in College Park

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

College Park homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around College Park were built before 1919 (about 79%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 8%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 89 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of College Park. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. More than half of the homes in the streets around College Park (about 79%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses of that age have plenty of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight, with each one scribed to the wall.

Leighton House, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live in a flat close to Willesden Junction station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to Saint Mark's, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
