Fitted cupboards for homes in Old Oak Common

About 42% of the homes in the streets around Old Oak Common went up since 2000, and about 32% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Old Oak Common is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Old Oak Common is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a family home near Old Oak Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Living in a block of flats near Willesden Junction station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How we make fitted cupboards for Old Oak Common

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. People normally come to us about a cupboard for the meters with easy access and landing shelves for bedding and towels, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Many homes around Old Oak Common were built since 2000, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Old Oak Common

Standard cupboards do not sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that aren’t square leave gaps at the sides and top that collect dust and look untidy. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Using the full height of a room
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner

Kelmscott House, about 2.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

What to check before you book

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Where they’ll park and unload

When you need someone else

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Building work or structural changes

What it’s made from

  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Is Old Oak Common in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Old Oak Common is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Old Oak Common affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
