Fitted cupboards for homes in Walham Green

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the streets around Walham Green, with about 21% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Walham Green is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Walham Green (about 54%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age have lots of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight.

The wider area includes historic houses like Carlyle's House, about 1 mile north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. For a family home near Chelsea Independent College, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near William Parnell Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Walham Green is in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, about 1 mile west of Fulham. About our fitted cupboards in Walham Green

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Walham Green built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Walham Green

Several things affect the price:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Examples of the look you’re after

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Imperial Wharf station?

Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

My home in Walham Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Is bespoke worth it?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. For awkward spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What you get with us

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Every quote follows a design visit

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what a quote should include.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Arranging a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Spray-painted finish

With a spray finish, the painting is done in the workshop, so there’s less to do on site.
