Fitted cupboards in Fulham

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

How we make fitted cupboards for Fulham

Our fitted cupboards are made for homes in Fulham and all over London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, and then send you a quote. Once agreed, we make the cupboards in our workshop and fit them in your home. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you are living with a linen cupboard on the landing and storage in a corner nothing else fits, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Fulham built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors gently at first and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, and knowing this early saves changes later.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and let us know where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and discuss the layout. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Questions we are often asked

I live in a flat in Fulham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in Fulham is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Is bespoke worth it?

Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, so the finish can match the room. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Fitted cupboards in Fulham: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Fulham were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 31 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Fulham. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the streets around Fulham, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

For a family home near St Johns Walham Green Church of England Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near West Brompton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
