Fitted cupboards for homes in Foots Cray

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. If you’re living with tall cupboards where space is short and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, fitted cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Around Foots Cray, where many homes date from the post-war decades, windows are often wide, with radiators below. A window seat there needs a grille or an open front so the heat still reaches the room. Elsewhere, fitted storage can fill hallways, landings and the space under the stairs, made to fit the room as it is.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Do not store things against the boiler
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Let us know how parking works on your street

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.

Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit. Much of London has controlled parking, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician
  • Any gas work around the boiler

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how a cupboard meets a wall that is not flat for a close fit.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Some spaces are just hard to use. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

If you live in a flat close to Sidcup station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
