Fitted cupboards in Albany Park, Bexley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in Albany Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Using the full height of a room
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

How we price fitted cupboards

The price for your room depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Where you live, with the postcode

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we make fitted cupboards for Albany Park

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option for putting shoes on by the door. If you are living with cupboards that suit a period house and a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around Albany Park, where many homes date from the post-war decades, you may have wide windows with radiators underneath. Seating over a radiator needs a grille or open front to keep the heat moving. Elsewhere, fitted storage can fill hallways, landings and the space under the stairs, made to fit the room as it is.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. Fitted storage is built in for good, and it’s made for this home rather than the next one. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Skirting boards stop standalone furniture sitting flat against the wall, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Fitted furniture is scribed over the skirting or set on its own plinth.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Why choose us

  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know beforehand helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Questions from Albany Park

Is parking a problem for fitting in Albany Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Albany Park?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
