Storage in Notting Hill homes: local notes

About 69% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Notting Hill went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 294 entries within half a mile of the centre of Notting Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. A van working in Notting Hill will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Shepherds Bush station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Sambourne House, about 0.7 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Notting Hill

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. If your home has using the full height of a room and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Notting Hill, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where space is tight, we plan how each door swings, so the doors clear the walls and stairs.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, especially when it uses the full height of the room.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Cosmic House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and talk through the layout.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Questions from Notting Hill

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My house in Notting Hill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it is normally a small hinge adjustment.

Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
