Fitted cupboards in South Kensington, Kensington and Chelsea
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in South Kensington starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat

- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

Questions we’re often asked
I live near West Brompton station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in South Kensington?
Yes. South Kensington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.
What are your cupboards made from?
Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?
Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them is not our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.
Fitted cupboards in South Kensington
We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. If you are living with using the full height of a room and making use of an awkward alcove or corner, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Older homes like many around South Kensington have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of homes around South Kensington are that old. Fitted cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitted storage in South Kensington
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Kensington were built before 1919 (about 71%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of South Kensington, 31 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.
For families living near Our Lady of Victories RC Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Burton’s Court? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.
South Kensington is about 1 mile north-west of Kensington, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. We can visit homes in South Kensington on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Kensington and Chelsea, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
We work across SW3, SW7 and SW10. You will find streets here such as King's Road, Fulham Road and Museum Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted cupboards. We also make fitted cupboards in nearby places like Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (2 miles north-west), Kensal Town (3 miles north-west) and North Kensington (3 miles north-west).

What prompts fitted cupboards in South Kensington
Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They are not much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- A neat cupboard around the boiler
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
- A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
If you live in a period home close to Chapel of St Luke, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:
- Building work or structural changes
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Electrical work inside the cupboard
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Hand-painted finish
- Ventilated doors
- Adjustable shelves
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- The sections are carried in, joined and set level.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Practical tips
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Make a note of what needs a home
- Leave room in front of the meters
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. A door that starts to rub can normally be set right at the hinge.
If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.
