How we make fitted cupboards for Brompton
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. Most enquiries start with built-in storage that matches the woodwork and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Brompton built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The number of doors and drawers
- The width and height of the space
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What we need to know
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- How you want to use the space
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
Questions from Brompton
Do you cover homes near London Victoria station?
Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Brompton?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Brompton homes and fitted cupboards
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Brompton were built before 1919 (about 69%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Brompton, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Brompton will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Close to Burton’s Court? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of Holy Trinity, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood is a good fit. We size each shelf for its span, depth and load.
Moisture-resistant MDF
A painted MDF door has a clean, even look, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.
Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
