Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Shepherds Bush station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near White City affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Fitted cupboards in White City: what you get

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If your home has storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear, fitted cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Wherever your home in White City sits in London’s mix of housing, there is typically a space that could work harder. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitted storage in White City

Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the area around White City, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. White City is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in White City is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael and St George, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. Close to Hammersmith Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, which keeps the look calm.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork

If your children go to Ark Swift Primary Academy or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

How to choose a carpenter in London

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Moving or servicing a boiler

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so they can be reached without a struggle.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
