Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Oakwood

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. If your home has space for laundry, cleaning things and boots and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. Around Oakwood, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Oakwood?

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, which keeps the look calm.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler

For a flat near Winchmore Hill station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the cupboards match the surrounding woodwork and makes later touch-ups easy.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For painted doors and panels, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it’s stable and smooth.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Oakwood

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Winchmore Hill station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Oakwood?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Oakwood homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Oakwood, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Oakwood, Historic England’s list includes Oakwood Underground Station (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and Station Sign to North of Oakwood Station (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Oakwood fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

For an older house near St Thomas's Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Close to Oakwood Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re likely to move soon and want to take the furniture with you, standalone cupboards may suit you better. Fitted storage is built in for good, and it is made for this home rather than the next one. How long you’ll stay is worth weighing up. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
