Fitted cupboards for homes in Grange Park

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option for putting shoes on by the door. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are landing shelves for bedding and towels and storage in a corner nothing else fits.

A good part of the housing around Grange Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Storage in Grange Park homes: local notes

About 34% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Grange Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Grange Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 55% of households in the streets around Grange Park live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary Magdalene, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Forty Hall, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Grange Park is about 3 miles south-east of Edmonton, part of the London Borough of Enfield. We can visit homes in Grange Park on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. In Enfield, Grange Park is one of the places we cover.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Grange Park affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Grange Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What are your cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

Can you build cupboards for a boot room?

Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing such as boots, coats, laundry and the vacuum. We’re carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.

Why bespoke in Grange Park?

There’s a place for both. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is typically the better answer. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can normally be set right at the hinge.

Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They shape the design, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Grange Park?

Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, especially when it uses the full height of the room.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Using the full height of a room
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary Magdalene, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

How to prepare

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
